Our Short and Sweet Story
Beth's parents owned a jewelry store in suburban Detroit, where she worked as a young adult. Wayne grew up on his family's farm and was always a rockhound. The two met in northern Michigan and found mutual love: for each other and the jewelry business.
Wayne and Beth opened a rock shop in 1975, which carried Petoskey stones, greenstones and copper, as well as lapidary equipment for fellow rockhounds and the era’s ever-popular macrame cord and wooden beads. They named it Miner’s North after Beth’s parents’ store, Miner’s Den, which opened near Detroit in 1971. The term “Miner’s” was originally adopted from the family’s historical ties to the California gold rush of the 1800s.
Two years later, they relocated to the heart of downtown and added gold charms, chains and, finally, diamonds. They moved the store again almost 20 years later, to expand their retail space in the current location on East Front Street. Wayne and Beth can still be found at the store, though their children, Jeff and Julie, have taken over day-to-day operations.
Jeff, the General Manager, is passionate about helping customers find exactly what they need. Miner’s North has always been a big part of his life, and Jeff says “working” in the store is one of his earliest memories. After graduating college, Jeff went to GIA to become a graduate gemologist. His vision is to be THE diamond destination and leading jewelry store in Northern Michigan, while also offering a memorable experience for each and every customer.
Julie, the Inventory Manager, also plays a huge role at Miner’s North. She started her career as a teacher but joined the family business after having children. Much of her work takes place behind the scenes, but is equally important for the success of our business.
Today, Wayne, Beth, Julie and Jeff are proud to call Miner's North northern Michigan’s most progressive jewelry store. Through passion and dedication, they work each day to offer a fantastic experience to every single guest.
